2 teens now facing charges in connection with double homicide

Virginia State Police have announced the arrest of a juvenile in connection with a double homicide last month in Halifax County. The 17-year-old, who lives in Danville, was charged as an accessory after the fact and also faces an obstruction of justice charge.

No name or other details about the teen were provided since they're a minor. Police also didn't say specifically what the teen's alleged involvement in the crime was.

Last month, another teen, an 18-year-old high school senior, was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder as well as using a firearm in a felony. He is currently in jail in Halifax.

The two people who were killed were a young couple, ages 19 and 21. They were found shot near their car along Route 58 in the early morning hours of Feb. 8. The car had crashed.

No potential motive or any other details have been reported. Police say the investigation is continuing. They're asking for the public's help and say they are accepting anonymous tips. The FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Halifax County Commonwealth's Attorney and the Danville Police Department are also involved in the investigation.

Here in Virginia, juveniles as young as 14 can be tried as adults for many crimes -- certainly for violent ones. However, lawmakers have moved to prevent kids that young from being tried as adults for some felonies like larceny (which involves stealing something valued at over $500).

If your child has been arrested, you want their rights protected, whether they are in the juvenile justice system or face the possibility of being tried as an adult. It's essential to have an experienced criminal defense attorney on their side.
