Woman charged with DUI after overturning vehicle

In the early morning hours of Feb. 4, a Virginia woman was seriously hurt when she crashed her vehicle in Augusta County. She has been charged with drunk driving.

Local media reports indicate that the defendant, age 21, was driving on the 600 block of Scenic Highway when she overturned her vehicle, suffering serious injuries in the process. She was transported to Augusta Health for emergency treatment and charged with DUI.

According to a representative of the Virginia State Police, troopers frequently encounter drunk drivers throughout the state, witnessing everything from swerving vehicles to major collisions. In fact, there were 80 alcohol-related accidents in Augusta County alone in 2019, which killed three people and injured 47 others. Around 40 of those crashes also caused property damage. In 2018, there were 77 alcohol-related accidents in the county. Those accidents resulted in five deaths, 51 injuries and 30 incidents of property damage. Because of these statistics, Virginia law enforcement agencies are reminding all drivers to arrange alternate transportation if they go out drinking. If they choose to drink and drive, they could endanger their lives and the lives of others.

Virginia residents arrested on drunk driving charges could face harsh consequences if they are convicted, including jail time. Even first-time offenders face heavy fines and the loss of their driving privileges. However, it might be possible to avoid some or all of these penalties by contacting a criminal defense attorney. The attorney may be able to review the evidence and work to develop a strong defense to the charges. Depending on the circumstances surrounding the case, this might help the defendant get the charges dismissed. If that isn't possible, the attorney may be able to negotiate a plea deal that significantly reduces the charges and penalties.
