2 Georgia residents convicted of drug charges in Virginia

In late September, two Georgia residents were convicted of multiple drug charges by a Virginia jury. The U.S. Department of Justice says the defendants were involved in a "major" drug ring.

According to media reports, the defendants, a 51-year-old man and a 57-year-old woman, conspired to transport alprazolam, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine and oxycodone from Watkinsville, Georgia, to southwest Virginia for distribution. They operated this illegal scheme, which primarily operated in Lee and Wise counties, from November 2016 until early 2018.

Law enforcement officers arrested the pair on March 1, 2018, and seized drugs with an estimated street value of $28,000. They also confiscated $14,000 in cash. The male defendant was convicted of one count of conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute, distributing 50 grams or more of methamphetamine, and 17 counts of distributing and possessing with the intent to distribute controlled substances. He faces 10 years to life in prison and a fine of up to $10 million. The female defendant was convicted of one count of conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute, distributing 50 grams or more of methamphetamine and one count of distributing and possessing with the intent to distribute controlled substances. She also faces 10 years to life in prison and a fine of up to $10 million. According to authorities, other defendants were also arrested and convicted for their roles in the drug ring.

People convicted for committing drug crimes can face years in prison and steep fines. However, when the prosecution's evidence is strong, a criminal defense attorney might be able to help protect a client's future by negotiating a plea deal that reduces the penalties in exchange for a guilty plea.
