Virginia man charged with DUI after pursuit

A 25-year-old Virginia man is facing a raft of charges including drunk driving after allegedly attempting to flee the scene of a traffic stop during the early morning hours of Nov. 3. Media accounts indicate that the Midland resident's secured bond has been set at $3,000 and he is being held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail.

A Stafford County Sheriff's Office deputy says that the sequence of events began when he signaled a vehicle to pull over for failing to come to a complete stop at a stop sign. The deputy claims that he had previously observed the vehicle repeatedly speeding up and slowing down. Instead of pulling over, the deputy claims that the vehicle left the scene at a high rate of speed.

Reports indicate that the ensuing pursuit was brief and ended when the vehicle struck a street sign on Winding Creek Road. Deputies say that they immediately smelled alcohol on the breath of the man behind the wheel of the vehicle and noticed several open containers of alcohol in the vicinity. After being taken into custody, the man was transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries and a search warrant was obtained to draw a sample of his blood.

Efforts to elude law enforcement are rarely successful and usually lead to additional charges. Experienced criminal defense attorneys may seek to mitigate the consequences of eluding charges in drunk driving cases by offering prosecutors a speedy resolution in return for leniency. Prosecutors work under great pressure and may be receptive to plea agreements even when the facts seem clear and the evidence is convincing.
