Virginia man charged with DUI after police chase

A Virginia man is facing drunk driving charges after allegedly leading deputies from the Stafford County Sheriff's Office on a high-speed vehicle chase on U.S. 17 and Interstate 95 and then fleeing on foot. The incident took place on April 30.

According to authorities, a deputy observed the 39-year-old defendant just after 8 p.m. and tried to execute a traffic stop near U.S. 17 and Washington Street in Stafford. However, the defendant refused to pull over and drove onto southbound I-95. At one point, he reportedly pulled over on the shoulder of the highway and slowed down. However, he then accelerated and began to weave through traffic.

Authorities said the defendant passed through Fredericksburg and then drove into Spotsylvania, where he lives. Once there, he allegedly continued to try to evade law enforcement officers with a number of wild maneuvers, including driving over a median to make a U-turn onto northbound I-95. Eventually, he ditched his car on the side of the road and took off on foot. A deputy chased him through a wooded area, and a K-9 officer found him hiding in a nearby commuter lot approximately three hours later. He was charged with DUI, reckless driving, felony eluding and driving with a suspended license.

Drunk driving charges could lead to serious legal ramifications, including incarceration, heavy fines and the loss of driving privileges. However, a criminal defense attorney might help a client understand his or her legal options and work to develop a solid defense strategy based on the circumstances of the case. Depending on the strength of the evidence, it may be possible to get the charges dismissed or negotiate a plea deal that reduces the charges and penalties.
