Talk show host changes his tune about crash

Virginia fans of outspoken talk show host Steve Wilkos may be surprised to learn he is changing his story about a recent car crash. In January, Wilkos suspended production of his popular television show after being injured in a single-vehicle accident in Connecticut. At the time, Wilkos said he had been driving without his prescription eyeglasses and lost control while attempting to reach for them. New details have resulted in a change to the story as the 53-year-old host now admits to drinking and driving on the day of the incident.

On Jan. 21, Dorian police reported that Wilkos hit three posts and a tree before flipping his vehicle in a residential area. Wilkos, who was the only person in his car, sustained non-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital where he provided law enforcement with a blood sample for chemical analysis. According to media reports the sample revealed a blood alcohol content of .29, which is substantially in excess of the legal limit. Authorities then charged Wilkos with driving under the influence and issued an arrest warrant. The gregarious host turned himself in without incident and posted a $1,500 bond.

Wilkos released a statement indicating that he has a history of depression and was going through a difficult period when he chose to drink and drive. He expressed regret for his behavior and gratitude for not having injured anyone other than himself. He further revealed his ongoing participation in a medically supervised program to deal with alcohol-related issues.

In addition to jail time, heavy fines and revocation of driving privileges, DUI offenders may lose future employment or educational opportunities. However, there are defenses available to those accused of DUI. Consulting a qualified and experienced criminal defense attorney can provide guidance and insight during a turbulent time.
