Virginia fans of the television show "Shameless" may be interested in learning that Ethan Cutkosky was taken into custody on Nov. 2 for driving under the influence. The 18-year-old was stopped in Burbank, California, after he was seen straddling the lane and driving unsafely at about 10:30 p.m.
Officers reported that they smelled the odor of burnt marijuana as they approached the vehicle. The actor reportedly confessed to smoking the drug earlier in the evening prior to driving. After the authorities conducted an investigation, they arrested the actor for driving under the influence of marijuana. He submitted to a chemical blood test, though the results were not known.
Cutkosky was taken to the Burbank City Jail and released several hours later after paying $5,000 for bail. He was scheduled to go back to court on Nov. 29.
In Virginia, drunk driving (DUI) charges can compromise a person's future, especially if this is his or her first offense. In addition to potential jail time, someone could have his or her license suspended for several months, preventing him or her from being able to get to work. A student could be prevented from getting a driver's license until later on, or he or she could be kicked out of school. A criminal law attorney may work with an accused individual to reduce the severity of the punishments. For example, a person could agree to undergo alcohol or drug treatment in order to seek reduced consequences. In other cases, a lawyer may try to have the charges dismissed if there is evidence that the authorities violated the person's rights or did not follow proper procedures.
