2 Virginia men face multiple charges after firing guns in street

An early evening call to police in Petersburg resulted in the arrest of two men. Officers on the scene reported that a crowd had gathered on the 600 block of Cottonwood Drive and that they saw firearms being discharged into the air. As officers advanced on the crowd, three men attempted to flee the scene. Police succeeded in arresting two of them, both 27, and the third man got away after dropping his gun.

Law enforcement confiscated three handguns from the scene. They also reported that the two men taken into custody were allegedly in possession of a scale, OxyContin, Xanax, cocaine and marijuana.

According to court records, one of the men had several outstanding warrants because of missing court appearances in other jurisdictions. Authorities charged both men captured in the incident with possession of controlled substances with the intention of distributing them, brandishing a firearm and possession of marijuana.

When authorities aim multiple drug charges at a person, a criminal defense attorney might take action to protect the person's rights. After an arrest, an attorney might review the evidence to look for weaknesses in the prosecution's case. Unlawful search and seizures by law enforcement could provide leverage that allows an attorney to get some evidence excluded. An attorney might also question the severity of the charges and get them reduced if the evidence cannot support them. Legal advice could help a person make an informed decision when considering a plea bargain. If a plea deal is offered, an attorney could explain its pros and cons or strive to negotiate more favorable terms that allow someone to avoid jail time.
