Former Knicks coach facing 2 DUI charges

Virginia basketball fans may be interested to learn that Derek Fisher has been charged with two counts of drunk driving on July 2. The former New York Knicks coach was involved in a one-vehicle crash in early June, though neither Fisher or his passenger suffered any injuries.

According to Los Angeles authorities, Fisher was driving on U.S. 101 when his 2015 Cadillac hit the shoulder near an interchange in the Sherman Oaks area. The vehicle hit the curb and a guardrail before overturning. Authorities determined that Fisher had been drinking and driving when the accident occurred. As such, he was taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

In Virginia, authorities take allegations of driving under the influence seriously and in many cases prosecute them aggressively. The consequences for DUI can range depending on the number of prior convictions a person has, the blood alcohol content and whether or not anyone suffered injuries in the incident. However, the consequences can go beyond legal problems, as a person facing DUI charges can often see increased insurance rates, a loss of driving privileges and termination from his or her job.

A criminal law attorney may potentially fight the charges by mounting a strong defense and challenging the case. For example, the attorney may investigate the validity of any breath, blood or urine tests that were taken if there were problems with the equipment. A challenge could also in some cases be made to the traffic stop itself as being conducted without the requisite reasonable suspicion.
