On April 14, it was reported that several Virginia men were taken into custody after it was alleged that they were involved in a drug ring. The arrests occurred after a month-long investigation that began with a single child abuse complaint. Although a total of nine individuals have been taken into custody, two were still on the run.
The complaint was being investigated in the 100 block of Shelter Cove Way in Carrolton. After authorities served a search warrant, they found what was thought to be a large quantity of cocaine. After obtaining a second search warrant, they reportedly uncovered additional items, including more narcotics. Approximately two kilos of cocaine, seven firearms and $50,000 in cash that was allegedly directly involved in the sale of drugs.
All of the individuals who were accused of being involved were being held in either Hampton Roads Regional Jail or Western Tidewater Regional Jail. The charges the men were facing ranged from conspiracy to distribute cocaine, distribution of heroin, distribution of marijuana and weapons charges. Authorities were still on the lookout for two men, ages 26 and 23, who were thought to be associated.
Felony drug charges have serious legal consequences if those who are facing them are convicted. In cases where multiple individuals may be involved, a criminal defense attorney could argue that the particular defendant had no knowledge of any crime that was being committed. In other cases, an attorney might attempt to negotiate an agreement with the prosecutor that would provide for a lesser penalty in exchange for a guilty plea.
