Former mayor pleads to meth charge

On March 1, 2017, the ex-mayor of Fairfax, Virginia, entered a guilty plea in response to a felony drug distribution charge of distributing crystal meth. The 51-year-old man was arrested in August 2016 after he sold methamphetamine to undercover police officers in return for group sex.

He entered the plea in Fairfax County Circuit Court. He is to remain incarcerated until June 9, 2017, when his sentencing hearing will take place. He is facing a $500,000 fine and a possible prison time of up to 40 years.

The ex-mayor was apprehended during a police operation at Tysons' Corner Hotel. The police reported that they had received a tip last summer that the ex-mayor was using an online dating service to set up rendezvous with men in exchange for drugs. According to local police, the former mayor met an undercover officer at the hotel and gave him two grams of meth.

The suspect had been free on bond since the beginning of his case. However, to the disappointment of his family and friends who were on hand during his hearing, the privilege was revoked. After his arrest, the former may resigned from his city position. The Fairfax County Public School system also terminated his position as a substitute teacher. Fairfax County is a predominately white, affluent suburb with almost 1.2 million residents. Located next to Washington, D.C., it is the location of some the most powerful federal agencies in the nation. It is also the second wealthiest county in the country.

Being convicted of drug crimes can result in stiff fines and long prison sentences. A criminal law attorney may work to protect the rights of a client who is facing drug charges. This may include challenging the search that led to the seizure of the drugs or, in other cases, asserting that the client was entrapped by authorities.
